Not a care in the world at Christmas
Christmas is now a distant memory and last year seemed to fly by. Christmas was so nice for having carefree days of getting up at 12 pm. Then lounging around in your pj’s eating and drinking all the treats in the house.
And for many students a time to catch up on the mountain of washing you’ve returned from halls or your student accommodation with. A carefree life is almost a distant memory, with university studies starting back soon. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news…but return you must!
New year
But even though the year has changed, some things will never change and no I don’t mean the rubbish piled in the communal kitchen. I’m talking about health and safety.
Yes, I know what you’re thinking, that’s for others to worry about, I just want to enjoy my time at university. And I have enough to worry about with assignments coming up soon. But, like it or not health and safety are everyone’s responsibility.

Back to it
As things slowly get back to normal and you move back to your university accommodation after what has felt like months not weeks.
There will be many hurdles along the way, like swapping comfy loungewear for suitable clothing, and swapping fluffy socks for sensible shoes will be an adjustment for sure.
But with all the newly washed clothes you should have an abundance of choice. Plus you’ll no longer enjoy the comforts of home like freshly cooked food and lots of it. It’s back to cooking packet pasta.
I know you won’t even consider health and safety. But one thing is for certain we have more focus now post-pandemic than ever on keeping well, and it’s what keeps people safe whilst at university and in university accommodation.
Have you considered the following:
Legionella
No…thought not and neither did I in my teens and 20s. It was more about planning the next party and stressing over deadlines.
So why would you- What is Legionella?
Legionella is the bacteria that causes Legionnaires’ disease (and other diseases), a potentially fatal form of pneumonia (lung infection). Legionella bacteria is spread by breathing in small droplets of water in the air where legionella bacteria is present.
The growth of bacteria in water systems is common and legionella bacteria under specific conditions can proliferate in the built environment. Maintaining good water hygiene management reduces the risks of Legionella outbreaks that can be fatal.

Awareness is key
Water is a fundamental part of life and life would be impossible without it. So we must be water aware and out of sight must never be out of mind.
University accommodation left unoccupied or with reduced occupancy can be a potential breeding ground for legionella. If a building was closed or has reduced occupancy during the Christmas break, water system stagnation can occur due to lack of use. This increases the risks of Legionnaires’ disease.
So what can you do?
Ligtas are pleased to be able to offer a legionella awareness course which can be completed online in only a few hours.
Or you can spend a little time watching our Legionella webinar to increase your awareness because it’s better to be informed and prepared in life.
Webinar: Legionella - Guidance for Reopening Buildings.

Party time
Then you can focus your time on the things that are important to you, like planning the next party when your student loan hits your account. Then your only worry will be how to feed yourself on £50 for a whole term when you’ve spent that student loan money.
Whatever course you’re studying for this year…
Ligtas would like to wish you every success in 2023 with your studies
